Viscosupplementation
Hyaluronic acid injections that restore natural joint lubrication and cushioning to relieve knee arthritis pain.
Overview
Viscosupplementation involves injecting hyaluronic acid — a naturally occurring substance found in healthy joint fluid — directly into an arthritic joint, most commonly the knee. In patients with osteoarthritis, the natural hyaluronic acid in joint fluid breaks down, reducing its ability to lubricate and cushion the joint. These injections supplement the depleted fluid, restoring shock absorption and reducing pain and stiffness.
How Viscosupplementation Works
Hyaluronic acid acts as a lubricant and shock absorber within the joint. When injected into an arthritic knee, it supplements the thinned synovial fluid, reducing friction between joint surfaces. It may also have anti-inflammatory effects and stimulate the joint to produce more of its own hyaluronic acid. The injection is performed in the office and takes only a few minutes.
- 1The knee is cleaned and a local anesthetic is applied
- 2Any excess joint fluid may be aspirated (removed) first
- 3Hyaluronic acid is injected directly into the joint space
- 4The injection site is covered with a small bandage
- 5Patient is advised to avoid strenuous activity for 48 hours
Benefits
- Reduced knee pain and stiffness from osteoarthritis
- Improved joint lubrication and cushioning
- Increased mobility and ability to perform daily activities
- Non-surgical alternative to joint replacement
- Relief that can last 6 months or longer
- Well-tolerated with minimal side effects
Recovery & What to Expect
Patients should avoid prolonged standing, walking, or strenuous activity for 48 hours after each injection. Mild swelling or discomfort at the injection site may occur temporarily. Pain relief typically develops gradually over 4–8 weeks. A course of treatment may involve one to five injections given weekly, depending on the product used. Many patients experience relief lasting 6 months to over a year.
Frequently Asked Questions
Viscosupplementation is most effective for mild to moderate knee osteoarthritis. It is a good option for patients who have not responded adequately to oral pain medications, physical therapy, or corticosteroid injections, and who wish to avoid or delay knee replacement surgery.
